For six months you’ll be able to dedicate yourself entirely to the study of flamenco guitar, with two and a half hours of class every afternoon. In this course you’ll be combining the Intensive Guitar Course and the Rhythmic Bases or Guitar Accompaniment for Dance and Singing courses, depending on your level in flamenco guitar. Our school offers two different levels: beginner/intermediate and intermediate/advanced, but it is a prerequisite in both to have a good understanding of the instrument beforehand, even if it is with other music styles.

As you progress, you can change from one level of Intensive Guitar to the next and between Rhythmic Bases and Accompaniment, always according to your needs. The combination of these two courses will let you progress adequately, studying all the techniques and learning falsetas (small variations on the original melody), chords, and rhythms for the different palos (different styles within flamenco). You will also learn to accompany flamenco dance and singing (once you master the rhythmic bases). At the end of the course you will receive a certificate with a complete report and a valuation by your tutor and teachers.

Each day, during the first class you will have half an hour of flamenco guitar technique -both left hand and right- and one hour to study a specific palo. Every two weeks you will study a different palo.

During the first half an hour of the beginner/intermediate level, the students are instructed in the correct hand placement as well as the best way to strum the guitar. They also practice simple exercises such as arpeggios, finger and thumb picking, strumming, tremolos, and alzapúas. At the intermediate/advanced level, students work with longer and more complex pieces as well as study the different scales (Major, Minor, modes, etc.).

After the first half-hour of class, the students are trained in the different palos or styles of flamenco such as Tangos, Fandangos de Huelva, Alegrías, Soleá, and more. At the beginning/intermediate level, the students study rhythm, short falsetas or variations, basic chords to accompany voice and some basic rhythms to accompany dance. At the intermediate/advanced level, students are instructed in guitar rhythm, more complex falsetas or variations and complete songs, as well as in the various accompaniments for the main styles of singing and dancing.

During the second class you will dedicate an hour to either Rhythmic Bases or Guitar Accompaniment for Dance and Singing.

In the Rhythmic Bases course, students will study the rhythmic base of a different palo, to learn right hand rhythm patterns. They will practice the basic chords and most common rhythm variations for each palo, with their different strummings. For this, part of the class will be dedicated to the strumming technique, arpeggio and thumb technique that is applied to each style. The palo practiced every two weeks will coincide with the one studied in the intensive course.

For the Accompaniment class, every two weeks the rhythm, melody and harmony of a different palo (style) is analyzed. Students will learn how to recognize the timing of heel taps, calls, silences, lyrics and falsetas (small variations on the original melody) of a dance, and where each part goes for that specific palo. In this class you will learn the most important aspects of flamenco guitar accompaniment, and find answers for any question you might have about the hardest part of flamenco guitar. It combines a more academic study of the subject, analyzing the music, and a more traditional approach, encouraging learning through immersion in flamenco. Both video recordings and live dancing and singing will be worked with.

Each day, the students will work with selected recordings of flamenco dance and singing, so as to put the techniques they learn into practice. It is important that the students come prepared, having watched dance and heard singing by the palo corresponding to that week. The course will take place the following way:

  • Rhythmic and harmonic analysis of each palo. In the rhythmic palos, the point in the beat where the chord changes will be analyzed too. Harmonic and melodic analysis. In the free palos, the moment to change chords attending to the singing will be studied.
  • The falsetas that each student has learned before will be used to enrich the singing. Students will practice the particularities of each palo, such as legatos, strumming techniques and other important elements.
  • The structure of the different dance styles will be analyzed: calls, heel taps, silences, lyrics and falsetas. Where each goes in the song and how to recognize them.
  • Students will learn different ways to call with the chords, strum and heel tap and how these can be used to enrich the dancing. They will also learn the hints that help tell each "palo" apart such as the chord progressions, ways to keep the beat, etc.
  • Either with CD, DVD or live dancing and singing, each student will have to apply what they have learned through the week.

The guitar instructors are themselves flamenco professionals with years of teaching experience. All of them perform on stage at the various tablaos or local theaters in Granada giving their students an opportunity to see them “in action” as artists outside of school.

So you can achieve a deeper knowledge of the flamenco guitar, we offer you the possibility of combining your guitar courses with the Understanding Flamenco set of courses (Rhythm, Singing, Structure of Dance and History of Flamenco). When you enroll on our Six-Month Flamenco Guitar Course, you can also enroll in 40 hours of those of these which interest you most at a reduced price. You can decide which courses are necessary to complement your training, but you can always count with the help and counsel of your tutor if you need it.

For some of these courses, since they are more theoretical, you will need to know Spanish at the B1 level, at least. If you need it, you can buy 30-hour “Spanish Packs” for 300€ each. Carmen de las Cuevas School has a Spanish department and is an Instituto Cervantes Accredited Centre, so it is also the ideal place for your Spanish studies.
