For at least six months, you will take 3 daily hours of flamenco classes.

Everyday from Monday to Friday, you’ll take three hours of flamenco dance. An hour and a half will be dedicated to studying technique and the other hour and a half to studying the choreography of the different styles or “palos” of flamenco. By focusing on one different style every two weeks, you will get a deeper understanding of the great variety in flamenco dance.
Each day students begin with different warm-up exercises, and are instructed in footwork, “marcajes” or upper body movement, turns, counter-time rhythms, arm positioning, hand positioning, balance and body placement. They practice all the components of the dance without needing to learn entire choreographies. Typically, students work on different aspects of the various flamenco styles: alegrías, bulerías, seguiriya, etc., at times using recorded music for their training.

Every two weeks students learn a different choreography of the most common flamenco dances, changing “palos” or styles depending on student level. The beginner level usually focuses on tangos, alegrías, fandangos and bulerías. At the intermediate level, students normally study alegrías, soleá por bulerías, bulerías, jaleos, fandangos, tientos, tangos or seguiriya, among others. At the advanced level, it’s possible to study an array of dances with the most frequently studied being the alegrías, soleá por bulerías, caña, seguiriya, martinete, soleá, taranto, tientos, farruca, tangos, bulerías, jaleos, fandangos, guajira or rondeña, among others. The students train with guitar accompaniment for half of their time in all the levels.

We place the most importance on the study of the “compás” or rhythm and the distinct styles of flamenco, its characteristics, and how to encapsulate and express it all in the different movements of the choreographies in conjunction with the accompanying guitar and voice.

Starting at the level that best meets your needs, you’ll move up through the distinct levels while your progress is closely monitored by a tutor assigned to you at the beginning of your course work. He or she will be available for advice concerning your dance training and academic needs and will help you decide when it’s the right time to change to a different level.

We also offer the possibility of combining your dance course with the Understanding Flamenco courses. When you enrol in our Six-month Dance Course, you will have the opportunity to choose 40 hours of the courses that most interest you for a reduced price. You will be able to decide which courses you need to complete your learning experience, but you can always count on your tutor to help choose what suits you best if you prefer.

For some of these Understanding Flamenco courses, since they are more lecture based, you will need to know Spanish at a B1 level, at least. In case you need it, you can buy 30 hour "Spanish packs" for 300€ each. Escuela Carmen de las Cuevas has a Spanish department and is an Instituto Cervantes Accredited Centre, so it is the perfect place to study Spanish.

In addition to this you may also participate for one week in our Understanding Flamenco: Rhythm for free, at the level that suits you best, as a complement to the dance classes.
